Adjusting Water Heater Temp

What Is the Ideal Water Heater Setting?

You should look at how high or low you adjust your water heater. You can control it hotter or cooler as needed.

Whatever the case is, you have to look at how you’re going to set your water heater. The effort should be about ensuring you have the best hot water experience in your home. You will have to look at how well your heater works. You must also see how you can adjust the heat setting on your heater, as you’ll have to ensure the design is easy to manage and use in your home.

The General Default

The default setting on your water heater will be at 140 degrees Fahrenheit or 60 degrees Celsius. Most manufacturers use this temperature. But the problem with that high of a configuration is that it requires extra power. You’ll have to wait a little longer for the heater to get the water warm enough. What’s even more concerning is that the water can be scalding, in some cases.

However, 140 degrees may be appropriate if you have a weakened immune system, or you regularly experience chronic illnesses. Your water heater will not be as likely to develop bacteria if the water is that warm. The point is thanks to the heater producing enough heat to where the bacteria that could grow will be killed off.

Keep It Lower

Unless you have immune system issues, the best idea for your water heater is to keep the setting down to 120 degrees Fahrenheit or 49 degrees Celsius. One hundred twenty degrees is ideal for how it provides enough warmth in your home, but not to where it could become dangerous on your skin. You won’t have to wait as long to get the water heater up and running.

What’s more, is that you won’t spend as much money on your water heating bills if you keep the temperature down to 120 degrees. You could save up to five percent on your energy bills if you reduce the setting down to 120 degrees.

A Helpful Note

The company that makes your water heater might set your heater to 140 degrees by default to make you more reliant on the unit. If you run it too hard it may break. You’ll have to adjust your heater yourself to keep the temperature down.

Ask us at Lasiter and Lasiter Plumbing about our hot water solutions. We can help you with finding and installing a new water heater. You can ask us about how you can adjust your heater after we finish installing the model.

video inspection

How Does a Video Inspection Work For Your Plumbing System?

At Lasiter and Lasiter Plumbing, we provide a video inspection service to help with identifying problems with plumbing systems of all sorts. We can check on the pipes and other lines around your property to identify significant concerns that are building up around your system.

The Process

But how does a video inspection work? Better yet, how can such an inspection work in a spot as dark as your plumbing system? The effort uses a few steps for simplicity and results:

  1. Prepare a flexible rod with a small camera on the end. The camera must be encased to resist water and anything else that goes through the plumbing system.
  2. An LED light must go on the lens of the camera. The light will illuminate what is inside the pipe, thus helping to identify anything inside.
  3. The camera should be slowly inserted into the drain where a problem is coming out of. The rod should be flexible enough to where the camera can go through whatever turns or curves may develop around the pipe setup.
  4. The lens moves through and checks on the inside of the pipe. The signals from the lens will link up to video material. A wireless signal should move between the lens and the video screen to show items in real-time. This includes identifying the precise physical spot where the issue at hand occurs.
  5. When something appears, the plumber will identify the problem in question. The plumber should note the size of the blockage or any foreign bodies that may be in the way. After this, plan a proper effort for removing or treating the concern.

One great part of what we use is that our camera materials are long enough to go through an average sewage line in a property. This includes reaching the end of the sewage setup that you would be responsible for maintaining.

The Lens

Also, the lens we use features a self-correcting body. The design keeps the lens from getting stuck. The work ensures that the camera will identify the concerns on the inside right away without worrying about whatever might occur or develop in a site.

Visibility

Ensure things are fully visible. There is a need to check on what is working here without any problems coming through. The camera review also provides a more accurate approach to finding things.

Schedule a Plumbing Video Inspection Today

The video inspection process resolves issues. Our experts at Lasiter and Lasiter Plumbing can help you with whatever threats might appear around your plumbing system and provide a full analysis of what is in your area.

pipe repair

What Does Trenchless Pipe Repair Entail?

Did you know that you don’t have to tear up your yard or landscape to get a new drainage pipe installed in your property? We at Lasiter and Lasiter Plumbing can help you with a trenchless pipe repair service that can fix or replace any pipes that have worn out. We can do this without ripping anything out of your yard or landscape.

You’ll need to get someone to repair or replace a pipe as necessary. You are generally considered responsible for:

  • blockages
  • clogs
  • or other issues that can develop in your plumbing system if they do occur.

How It Works

You might be curious as to how we at Lasiter and Lasiter can repair or replace your pipes without tearing anything apart. But the process is more intriguing than you might expect it to be:

  1. Apply a few access points around your pipes. These points are based on the location of clogs and other issues.
  2. Apply the cable to an access point. The cable will reach the pipe area and will incorporate the appropriate compounds for fixing the pipe. This may entail a coating or a new pipe altogether.
  3. The cable will pull the new pipe or other fixes in its place.

The effort ensures the problem is fixed without adding lots of holes or other unsightly things around your yard. After, the new pipe material can be rated to last for about fifty years on average depending on usage and soil conditions. The extended lifespan will be positive to note surrounding how well your setup is working at your home.

When Does This Work?

The trenchless pipe repair process is ideal when you have regular drain backups around your yard. These include backups that negatively impact all parts of your plumbing system. Cases, where different drains are backed up due to regular use of other drains likely require repair. You can ask us to help you with fixing all these concerns if anything significant might occur where you are.

What If the Fix Cannot Work?

The clean replacement process is efficient, but some cases require a full replacement. For instance, a sewer line might sag or has collapsed all the way. In such cases, you need a full replacement to solve the problem.

The thorough effort can be difficult, but your yard only has to be due through if the damages or other issues are too significant. You’ll need to ask us to check on your plumbing system before we begin to figure out what might work for your site.

tree roots and pipes

How Do Tree Roots Enter Your Plumbing System?

Every property in the DFW area could benefit from a few trees here and there. Trees add value to a home, not to mention they create a peaceful look anywhere they are planted.

But after a while, a tree can grow to where it might be obstructive. The tree might start to get in contact with your roof, your windows, or your siding. A tree could also get in the way of anything you have on your roof, whether it entails a satellite dish or a solar panel. But the most annoying issue comes from a tree’s roots getting in the way of your plumbing system.

You could always trim a tree when it interferes with your roof or other things around your house. But roots entering your plumbing system are a whole other story. You might struggle to keep these roots from interfering with your pipes and other things in your setup. This is an unfortunate concern, but it is something that must be noticed regardless of the concern.

The General Process

A tree will require water in order to grow. Roots can search for water and can grow in areas where water is present. In this case, your plumbing system will be an obvious site for growth.

The root will latch onto the pipe to reach the water source it requires. As this occurs, the roots will eventually break into the pipes to directly get the water. The tree roots can eventually get into a tangle that will take over your plumbing system and interfere with how well it operates. The breakthrough will cause irritation in your plumbing system and eventually cause dramatic clogs that make the situation worse.

How Can You Tell There’s An Issue?

You can tell that tree roots have interfered with your plumbing system by looking at a few things:

  • If many drains around your home are backing up; these may link to the mainline
  • Another drain starts to back up when you do something near another drain; this includes a drain backing up when you flush a toilet in a different room
  • Things bubbling up around your yard
  • Some unusual scents may also develop depending on the condition

What Should Be Done?

You can ask us at Lasiter and Lasiter Plumbing to help you with resolving the tree root issues in your plumbing system. We can complete video inspection of your pipes to find the specific issues at hand. Then we’ll remove and replace any old sewer lines around your property.

We can resolve the pipes around your home and restore their functionality. More importantly, the work will not entail any caustic materials that might destroy your tree’s roots. Such materials can kill off trees altogether. Even worse, the roots may return after a while and become even more aggressive or hard to clear out.

Thread Tape Used By Plumber

What Is Thread Tape, and How Does It Work For Plumbing?

One thing that we at Lasiter and Lasiter Plumbing often use in our plumbing tasks is thread tape. This is a distinct material that works for many plumbing tasks. We can use this for many of the more complicated tasks that you might need help with, including when it comes to restoring sites that might leak or otherwise cause possible damages to your plumbing setup. Such concerns may become dangerous if not handled well with the appropriate thread tape.

Makings of Thread Tape

Thread tape is made with polytetrafluoroethylene or PTFE. PTFE is a popular polymer used in many industrial applications. The compound keeps various items in place, including some of the parts inside a toilet or drain that might move on occasion. Our work can help with identifying any parts that need added tape materials, not to mention items that might not require full replacement but still needs extra help for support purposes.

Keep Things From Being Too Tight

One of the greatest problems people have when taking care of plumbing tasks on their own is that they may make connections tighter than necessary. Such tight connections can be difficult to manage, but our experts at Lasiter and Lasiter Plumbing can help you with using the appropriate tape materials to prevent things from becoming too hard or otherwise hard to support. Keeping the seal under control will ensure that your materials will stay healthy and protected.

The tape material provides a secure seal without potentially making things tighter than necessary. This is to keep the material protected as well as possible.

Stick Around For a While

One of the most attractive parts of thread tape is that it provides a long-term approach to resolving many problems that can come in a setup. Thread tape helps to seal even the most difficult materials at a time without risking wear. Many of today’s tape materials with PTFE compounds can handle temperatures from -450 to 500 degrees Fahrenheit. The intense stability of PTFE makes it a polymer unlike anything else you might find elsewhere.

Unless exposed to a direct and open flame, the PFTE will not decompose. The intense heat from that flame would cause the material to wear out. Fortunately, you will not be as likely to experience lots of heat off of something when you use good thread tape.

Do Metals Work?

Thread tape is a unique material that can work well if handled accordingly. You can talk with us at Lasiter and Lasiter Plumbing for more details on what we can do with plumber’s tape and how it might work for many needs.

Using a Plunger in the Toilet

Using a Plunger the Right Way

Our experts at Lasiter and Lasiter Plumbing understand what it takes to use a plunger. It is true that anyone could use a plunger to take care of clogs and backups in their toilets or sink traps. But have you considered how most people who try using plungers are doing so the wrong way?

Separate Plungers For Separate Situations

One way how people fail to use plungers right entails using the same one for many things. It is safer and hygienic to use separate plungers for different places. One plunger would be for toilets, while another would be for sinks. A smaller plunger would work better for a sink, to begin with, with a sink opening often being smaller in size than what you might find in a toilet.

The Design Is a Point

The way a plunger is designed directly influences how well it works. A plunger can be found in one of two forms. The first is a cup plunger that works for flat-surface spots. The second is a flexible flange that is for angled spots and can help with adding extra suction power all around.

The Position

The plunger position is important. For best results, the plunger head is immersed in water. The water can move through the plumbing setup to force out a clog. This helps with moving things forward without having to add any extra compounds or potentially dangerous chemicals.

What About Chemical Use?

People often use plunger improperly by using a plunger alongside chemical materials. A chemical can cause a clog to become worse. In some cases, the chemical material can break pipes apart and wear them out. Some chemicals also come out from the drain and splash onto people, thus causing potentially harmful burns.

You would have to avoid using a plunger alongside any chemical materials. Using both at the same time would put you at risk of harm. This is a simple tip to follow, but it is also one that many people fail to heed for varying reasons.

What About Overflowing Situations?

The last issue people have with plungers is that they try using them when the toilet or sink is near the emergency overflowing stage. It is often best to wait about ten to fifteen minutes to allow the water level to naturally drop to where the plunger will be easier to use. The water will be enough to let the plunger work, but not to the point where the mess produced would become worse.

A plunger is an important tool for plumbing use, but it can be easy for people to use improperly. Knowing what it takes to make such a tool work for many purposes is critical to the success of a work project. Call Lasiter and Lasiter Plumbing for help today.

Flushing Medication

The Risk of Medications In Your Plumbing System

People often dispose of their medications in their plumbing systems. These include medications that have either expired or are unnecessary for whatever reason. But disposing of medications in your plumbing system will be extremely dangerous. The plumbing setup can be harmed, not to mention the old materials can run off into the environment. But you can dispose of these medications safely, as this guide will show.

The Threats Involved

There are multiple issues associated with disposing of medications in your plumbing system:

  • Many medications can stick inside your pipes. This is the case for medications that dissolve and break down over time. Anything that has hard cases or capsules may also become a problem.
  • As a medication dissolves, it can destroy the lining of your pipe system. The concern varies by the medication, but it should be checked accordingly.
  • The medication can run off into a water source or other area outside your home. This can be dangerous to plants, animals, and other people. The problem is especially concerning if you are disposing of narcotics, as these can harm your property further.
  • Medications can also cause odors in your plumbing system. This is due to various reactions triggered by medications. The problem can become concerning if you are using flavored medications.

How to Dispose of Medications the Right Way

The blockage issues involved with medications going in your plumbing system can be significant. But the good news is that you can dispose of medications in various ways. Here are a few things you can do when getting rid of your medications safely and without risk:

  • You can mix medicines with dirt, old coffee grounds, or other unpalatable substances. The medications can be mixed with these and added in bags to be disposed of in the trash. Don’t put these down the drain. The work ensures that your medications will not break down in a landfill, not to mention they will not break apart further. Be sure you avoid crushing whatever you are using.
  • Dispose of any old medicine packages accordingly. Make sure you scratch out any personal bits of data on your labels. You can also remove the label and shred it accordingly if you are capable of doing so. The key is to keep your personal info from being visible on the old package.
  • You can also dispose of your old medications at a collection event. Such events allow people to safely dispose of old medicines that will be handled by the appropriate authorities. This option may be easier than others, but you should check online to see what the next events will be in your area.

Food Down the Drain

What Foods Shouldn’t You Put Down Your Drain?

There are many times when you might consider putting old bits of food waste down your drain. Seeing how easy it can be to clear that out instead of putting it in the trash, you might assume it would be found for you to add stuff in your kitchen drain.

But there are some foods that you must avoid putting in your drain. These are foods and other compounds that will damage your drains and make the worst situations surrounding how well your drain is working even more difficult or troubling to handle.

List of Foods to Avoid

The following guide includes points on foods that may clog your drain. These are going to produce many long-term threats and should be avoided as well as possible:

Cooking Oils – Cooking oils can solidify and clog pipes. The unsavory scents will make things worse. Dispose of your oils in the trash.

Butter and margarine – Both can also solidify and get into your pipes. The butter material can resist water as well. This should also be disposed of in the trash.

Grease – Grease and any other fat-materials should be thrown in the trash as well. Fat materials can resist moisture and will stick around in your plumbing system for a while, not to mention they might produce annoying scents.

Eggshells –  Eggshells can take a while to break down. These can also hurt any grinding features in your drain disposal. Eggshells are better suited for compost.

Coffee Grounds – Coffee grounds are also ideal for compost. Grounds are not going to break apart well, plus they can stick around even when there’s lots of water moving all around.

Cooked Pasta – Pasta can expand when it is exposed to water. The pasta can stick and clog your pipes and drain. The same can also be said for rice.

Flour – Flour can expand when in contact with water. The potential for flour to expand while inside your pipes can produce a significant threat.

Skins – Produce skins and rinds should be composted. These are very bulky and can harm your drainage system. Any stickers on your produce can also clog up a pipe and stick on the end, so be sure to avoid adding those to your drain too.

All of these items can stick around your pipes and clog your system. These clogs are more likely to develop on bends and curves around your system, although they may still appear just about anywhere in your home.

Clean Out Your Drain Immediately

You’ll have to ensure these are cleaned out as soon as possible to prevent potential threats from becoming worse than expected. This is to keep your work under control without possible harm. Our experts at Lasiter and Lasiter Plumbing will help you with cleaning your drains if you ever come across any issues surrounding these items.

You can reach us at Lasiter and Lasiter Plumbing if you ever need help with whatever it is you need for your plumbing needs. We’ll ensure that your work is managed well and that there will not be any problems involved with the work at hand.

plunger

When Is It Best to Use a Plunger?

The plunger is one of the most valuable tools that you can use in your home. We at Lasiter and Lasiter Plumbing have used plungers for years. But you will have to observe for how you can get a plunger ready for your use.

We at Lasiter and Lasiter Plumbing can help you with getting a plunger ready for your toilet, especially if you have a severe clog that is very persistent. But there’s a need to look carefully at what’s going on when getting a plunger ready.

How Does the Water Drain?

You might notice cases where the water drains slowly. This includes instances where the toilet doesn’t flow after you flush. The issue can be a real concern, especially since you’d have to wait for a little extra to use the toilet once again.

A plunger may help when you’ve got a clog that is impacting your water line to where the water isn’t draining well. You can reach us for help if you have this concern.

What About Total Clogs?

There are often when a total clog might develop in a toilet. This is where nothing is going down at all. This is a significant threat that can make it to where the bathroom can overflow.

It could be dangerous to get a plunger with the toilet paper possibly being unsanitary. Having a professional to help you with safely clearing out a total clog with a plunger or other related tool would be the best thing to do when keeping your toilet under control.

Do You Even Know How to Use a Plunger?

The effort that goes into using a plunger can be a challenge. Our experts at Lasiter and Lasiter Plumbing understand what it takes to get a plunger working. But you need to ensure your plunger is used well enough and without a struggle.

You would have to keep the plunger perfectly vertical over the toilet bowl. This includes ensuring the plunger is not going to stay intact or stuck. Using the plunger at an angle would reduce the amount of leverage that one has over the clog, thus making it harder for the clog to be cleaned out.

What About Other Places?

Have you considered how a toilet isn’t the only thing that you could use a plunger for? You can get a plunger ready for use on a sink, a tub, or even a drain in your shower. The process of using a plunger on one of these drains can be very intricate. You might not know how well to get the plunger applied all the way through.

But the good news is that our experts can help you with making the most out of your contents. A plunger can make a real difference when taking care of your toilet, but you’ll have to use your plunger correctly.

You can reach us at Lasiter and Lasiter Plumbing if you need extra help with getting your plumbing efforts handled, especially when it comes to using a plunger.
